Since
winning the Royal Overseas League Music Competition in London in 1992,
clarinettist Robert Plane has enjoyed a successful and varied career as
a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral principal.
Robert made his Swiss debut in 2004, performing
Finzi’s Clarinet Concerto with the Zurich Chamber Orchestra in the
prestigious ‘Tonhalle’. Other major European Halls in which he has
performed include Madrid’s Auditorio Nacional de Musica and London’s
Barbican. Robert makes frequent concerto appearances with the BBC
National Orchestra of Wales, with whom he is principal
clarinet, and has also made concerto
apeparances with the City of London Sinfonia, Ulster Orchestra,
Northern Sinfonia, Bournemouth Sinfonietta and the Scottish
Ensemble.
As a chamber musician Robert has played at many of
the major UK halls including the Wigmore, Bridgewater, Queen Elizabeth
Hall, Queen’s Hall, Edinburgh and St. George’s, Bristol. Overseas
chamber tours have taken him to North and South America, South Korea
and Taiwan and much of Europe, including Germany, France, the Republic
of Ireland, Malta, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man performing
at festivals from Cheltenham, Spitalfields and Belfast to
Hambachermusikfest and Tanglewood, USA.
Robert has collaborated with many ensembles and
future chamber performances include Mozart Clarinet Quintet with the
Brodsky Quartet, a return tour of the Channel Islands with the Plane
Dukes Rahman Trio and a CD recording of Brahms’s Clarinet Trio with the
Gould Piano Trio as part of their Brahms Trio cycle for Quartz.
Robert has become particularly well known for his
best-selling Naxos recording of Finzi’s Clarinet Concerto, which is
broadcast regularly on BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM. This disc won ‘Best
Concerto Recording’ in the Classic CD Awards in 2000 as well as an
Editor’s Choice recommendation in Gramophone. Robert Plane's recent CD
release for Naxos of Stanford's clarinet chamber music was selected as
Classic FM's Disc of the Week in August.
