ROSS CUMMING


Ross Cumming is a Baritone, originally from the NE of Scotland. He graduated with a First Class honours degree in Music from University of Aberdeen and then went on to complete his MMus in Performance with Distinction at the Royal Northern College of Music under the tutelage of vocal coach Matthew Best and an MMus in Opera at the Alexander Gibson Opera School, Royal Conservatoire of Scotland with vocal coach Scott Johnson.

He was a 2023/24 Scottish Opera Emerging Artist and is again in 2024/25.

Ross has performed lead roles in college opera productions and has performed
professionally in the Young Artist Programme at the Buxton International Festival Opera, as well as with Opera Festival Scotland and Cumbria Opera and more recently with Grange Park Opera.  He has been a VOCES8 Scholar, a Dunedin Consort Young Artist and a member of Genesis Sixteen.  In 2023 he won the Basil Turner Prize awarded by the Toni V. Fell Trust and in 2021 the Bessie Cronshaw/Frost Brownson Song Cycle Competition having previously won the Ogston Music Prize.

In 2023 he sang the lead role of Pilgrim in British Youth Opera’s production of The Pilgrim’s Progress and in 2024 the role of Junius in the Rape of Lucretia.

He has been mentored by Roderick Williams and has had recent Masterclasses with Sir John Tomlinson & Susan Bullock.

Alongside his operatic career, Ross is a keen concert soloist and has regularly performed in opera galas, recitals and concerts across the UK. Ross has been supported in his studies by a RCS Scholarship and a RNCM Scholarship and by grants from the Robert Nicol Trust and the Caird Travelling Scholarship.
