SOPHIE BURNS 


Sophie Burns is an Australian mezzo-soprano, celebrated for her rich mezzo voice and captivating performances across Europe. In 2024, she made her debut as Carmen at the Palau de la Música Catalana, followed by her portrayal of Suzuki in Madama Butterfly at the same venue. In 2025, she will reprise both roles at the Palau. Sophie will also cover the iconic role of Dalila in Saint-Saëns' Samson et Dalila with Melbourne Opera. Additionally, she will debut as Zia Principessa in Suor Angelica at the Maria Callas Fondazione in Verona at the end of 2024.

Her repertoire spans a wide range of roles, including Abra (Il Diluvio UniversaleDonizetti Opera Festival), Lola (Cavalleria RusticanaOpera al Laghetto), Mercédès (CarmenOpera Brava), Maddalena and Giovanna (RigolettoOpera Molise and Opera de Tenerife), Dorabella (Così fan tutteOpera Studio Puglia), Zweite Mädchen (Der ZwergOpera de Tenerife), and multiple roles in Suor Angelica, including Maestra delle NovizieBadessa, and Zia Principessa.

As a selected artist for the Opera (e)Studio program at Opera de Tenerife, Sophie debuted as Zulma in L’Italiana in Algeri, performing in both Tenerife and at Teatro Comunale di Bologna under the direction of Giulio Zappa and Nikolas Nägele.

Sophie has received the Elizabeth Connell Prize from the Joan Sutherland and Richard Bonynge Foundation, the Acclaim Italian Opera Fellowship, and was named Young Artist of the Year by the Richard Wagner Society Australia, received the Hugh Rogers Scholarship for the Acclaim Italian Opera Awards, and was named Scholar of the Year by the Maroondah Singers Melbourne.

Sophie is a graduate of the Conservatory of Music at both the University of Melbourne and Monash University Australia. In support of her studies and to award excellence in performance, Sophie was given the Barbara Bishop Hewitt Scholarship for excellence in performance.

 A keen linguist, Sophie has also spent many years honing her Italian, French and German; all of which she is able to speak to a high degree.
