SARAH CHAE


South Korean soprano Sarah Chae has performed in a diverse range of traditional and contemporary repertoires. Recent engagements include her 2024 roles as Lesbia in Bampton Classical Opera’s L’isola d’Alcina and Satanella in Balfe’s Satanella at the Erzgebirgische Theater in Germany. In 2023, she was Calloandra in the UK premiere of Salieri’s La fiera di Venezia with Bampton Classical Opera and covered Violetta in Verdi’s La Traviata with Oxford Opera.

Previously, Sarah performed the Vixen in Janáček's The Cunning Little Vixen, Coraline in Turnage’s Coraline at Staatstheater Saarbrücken, Musetta in Puccini's La Bohème, Lucia in Britten's The Rape of Lucretia at Saar University of Music, and Amore in Monteverdi’s L'incoronazione di Poppea at Theater Trier.

As a Young Artist with the National Opera Studio (NOS) in London, Sarah collaborated with Welsh National Opera in scenes from Handel’s Semele as Iris, Mozart’s La finta giardiniera as Serpetta, Donizetti’s Don Pasquale as Norina, Verdi’s Falstaff as Nanetta, and Bellini’s I Capuleti e i Montecchi as Giulietta. With Opera North, she performed scenes as Violet in Coult’s Violet and the Younger Sister in Dove’s Pig. In partnership with Scottish Opera and NOS, she sang Mademoiselle Silberklang in Mozart’s Der Schauspieldirektor, Ännchen in Weber’s Der Freischütz, and Zerbinetta in Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos.

Sarah has received multiple awards, including the Richard Wagner Scholarship (Bayreuth, 2019), a special award at Stara Zagora State Opera (2019), 3rd prize at the III European Competition in Torino, Italy (2021), and a special prize at the 16th International Vocal Competition Gabriela Beňačková in Jihlava, Czech Republic (2023).

She completed her Bachelor’s degree in 2018, her Master’s degree in 2020, and her Konzertexamen in 2023 at Saar University of Music in Germany. She also studied with Professor Donatella Debolini at the Luigi Cherubini Conservatorio in Florence, Italy, from 2019 to 2020 as part of the Erasmus programme.
